- Check the tyres. You need to make sure the tyres are in good condition with lots of tread left. The tread should be well above the legal limit marker, for safety’s sake. - Caravans tend to be left unused over the winter months which can cause damage to the tyres. Ensure that there’s no signs of the tyres becoming perished. Many caravan owners decide to take the wheels off while it’s being stored so they can be kept somewhere warmer.
- Check the hitch. The hitch also needs to be in good condition. If it’s the type of hitch that needs grease, make sure that there’s plenty there. It’s easier to spot the early signs of corrosion if you check the hitch on a regular basis. The breakaway cable needs to be there and uncorroded.
- Clearly, the brakes need to be be in good condition. Fully lubricate all the cables. The handbrake should move freely without sticking. Thoroughly check the brakes after taking it out of storage.
- Checking the electrics is also important but it’s a very simple job. It’s as easy as hooking up the caravan and having someone else check that the lights work. Have any broken bulbs replaced.
- These checks need to be done a while before you want to leave. This gives you time to fix something if required.
