Improve Your Health By Spending Time Outdoors Hiking

Subscribe To Our Feed

The next time your boss tells you to take a hike, he may not mean that you are fired. Instead he may be offering you a way to improve your health. Hiking is a great way to relieve stress. It allows you to get some exercise and spent time outdoors. There are many health benefits to taking a hike.

If you want to start hiking, you will find that there is little equipment that is needed. In the winter, you will need warm clothing. Much of the spring through the fall you may find that shorts or jeans and a t-shirt work just fine for clothing. If you plan to hike in the rain, you will want to have a set of good quality rain gear.

The most important gear you will need for hiking is sturdy boots that are also comfortable. Leather brown boots offer protection to both your ankles and feet while in rough terrain. They also protect you from snake bite if you will be hiking where venomous snakes are likely to be found.

You may find that it is easy to lose track of time while in the woods hiking. In many respects, this is a good thing as you relax and ponder life. However, if you linger too long you may find yourself trying to get back to your vehicle in the dark. A men’s sport watch will help you to keep track of the time. The watch is smart enough for a casual dinner out and for most jobs. In addition, it is sturdy enough to accompany you on your hikes or a trip to the beach.

Often it only take a couple of afternoons per month spent hiking through some of your favorite places in order to keep you recharged and able to get more accomplished during the rest of your time. As you benefit from the stress relief of hiking on a regular basis, you may see such health benefits like lower blood pressure and fewer headaches. The benefits are certainly worth the investment of your time.

The sport of hiking is one that can be enjoyed by almost everyone. In many places there are trails that are even wheelchair accessible. Hiking is a great way for mom, dad, the kids and grandma and grandpa to spend some time together for family bonding.

After a long hike in the woods you are going to be ready for a more relaxed sleep. Head home for a warm shower and put on your Nautica sleepwear. It is time for a good night’s sleep.

Breakfast Backpacking Recipes

Subscribe To Our Feed

Most backpacking recipes focus on lunches and dinners. But a good breakfast is a great way to start a day of hiking. Here are a few ideas for keeping it simple and easy.

Cereal

If you are used to eating cereal with milk, you might think you have to skip this when backpacking. Fortunately there are at least two good ways to still have your morning bowl of cereal. The first is to simply bring powdered milk. Add a little to the cereal and pour a half cup of water into the mix.

Some of us don’t like the taste of powdered milk much. The alternative for us is to just add water. This may sound too plain, but there are some ingredients you can add that will make you hardly notice the missing milk. One is shredded coconut. In fact, if you let the coconut flakes soak for a few minutes before you add the cereal, the water will have more flavor and a better consistency. Coconut goes especially well with granola cereals, but works with almost any of them.

Adding dried fruit makes the lack of milk less noticeable as well. Raisins or dried strawberries can be used. It may help to soak the fruit for a few minutes before adding the cereal.

A fourth option is to use freeze-dried ice cream. Having just recently tried this for the first time, I was surprised by how tasty it is. It’s great by itself, but you can also soak it in water and mash it up until it liquefies to use it with cereal. You’ll have to experiment at home to see which cereals go best with the ice cream flavor.

Cold Weather Backpacking Recipes

If you are backpacking in cold weather you may need recipes for hot foods. You can still keep breakfast relatively simple though. Instead of foods that need longer cook times, bring simple cereals that can be eaten as hot mush. All you need to do then is get the water near boiling and pour it into the bowl of cereal. Add raisins or other dried fruits for a healthier start to the day.

No actual boiling or long cooking will save you stove fuel and therefore pack weight. But what if you are backpacking out in the cold and like myself you still prefer not to bring a stove at all? In that case you will want some fatty foods to start the morning. Fats create heat as they digest, warming you up from the inside.

I have no fancy backpacking recipes for this purpose, and there is no need for them. easy and fast is my own preference. A piece of bread covered in butter will do the trick. Bring cinnamon raisin bread if you have a sweet tooth. In cold weather you can also bring bagels and cream cheese. And if you really aren’t picky about what you eat in the morning, plain corn chips have a lot of oil to warm you up.

Where Can I Go Camping in A Tent?

Subscribe To Our Feed

This article looks at the different tastes that people may have in camping and encourages people to think for themselves when it comes to choosing the ‘best’ place to camp, expressing their own individuality as opposed to just going where everyone recommends, which will not be suitable for everyone.

Campers, it has to be said, are a little like fishermen. Someone always has a better story to you. If you have found the best tents, campsite or the best place to camp in the UK, then they have found the best place to camp in the world, if not the Universe. But there are some great places to camp in the UK and indeed the world, but it depends on what your personal preferences and likes are. What is right for you may not be right for all and vice versa.

You should go for the big campsites if you are more of a social person, here you can mingle with other campers and have fun and enjoy the3 experience together.

The choice of camping tents also can often be bewildering and I will cover this in another article- watch this space!

This might not be a great camping experience for you however. If on the other hand you like the quite life, then go somewhere off the beaten track where you can enjoy the wildlife in isolation and quite.

Commercially run campsites are pretty standard and the good campsites are ones that have the facilities that you want (and doesn’t have the ones that you don’t want).

You need the permission of the owner for a field that is not a designated campsite. It is not possible sometimes to find the owner to ask for permission however.

On any camp site you will get advice from other campers on campsites they would recommend or avoid. When you wake in the morning you may well discover that the great camping spot you set up the previous night might not turn out to be so good.

You need to find out what your tastes are. If someone likes something, it means it is good for them and not necessarily for everyone. Don’t follow the pack, make your own mind up where you camp. Camping is about you as a person and not about just following trends so go your own way and listen to recommendations, but keep a level head, one size does not fit all when it comes to camping.

Going camping can be extremely fun. It’s a time in the outdoors. It’s a time to connect with  nature. It’s a time to get the whole family away from the television and the telephone. The big task of each day is cooking the camping food though. You need things that are pretty simple and don’t require much to make them.

Backpacking Games That Weigh Nothing

Subscribe To Our Feed

Some of the smaller electronic video games make good backpacking games, but you have to carry extra batteries. Some board games have light enough versions, like the cloth chess board and light plastic pieces that I occasionally carry with me, but then I need a flat surface to set it up on. In any case, being an utralight backpacker, I prefer the games that don’t add a single ounce to the pack. here are some examples.

Games Using Natural Items

There are a lot of games that can be set up quickly using natural elements available in the wilderness. Perhaps the simplest is the game Tic-Tac-Toe. Scratch two lines in the sand and two crossing those and you have your board. Each player can use a stick to make his marks. In sand the marks are easily erased in preparation for the next round.

If there is a large enough flat area with dirt or sand that can be smoothed out, there is another games that can be played with sticks for pencils. Make a grid of lines roughly ten by ten, and then in the boxes created write the first letter of your name. Your opponent will then do the same, with the object being to get five of your initials in row.

Not all backpacking games need to be mental games. You can have a lot of fun with simple tests of coordination and throwing ability, for example. Just create a circle or square two feet across, and toss pine cones at it to see who can get the first one to stay inside the target, or who can get the most out of twenty to stay in it. If there are no pine cones, use rocks or pieces of wood or sea shells.

In the winter you can of course have snowball fights. But if you prefer not to get wet and cold, you might have a competition that involves hitting a tree or other target. Competitive building of snow shelters can be fun as well, and it will help you train for survival, just in case.

Games That Require No Materials

Some of the best backpacking games don’t require you to either carry pieces or gather natural materials. These are the purely mental games that will balance the physical exercise with some mental training. For example, there is the game where you say a word and then your opponent has to say one that starts with the second letter of the one you used. You then have to do the same, and so on, until one of you cannot find a word within fifteen seconds or so, and so loses.

There is a good mental exercise that will also train you in the right frame of mind to deal with wilderness emergencies. Start by choosing any item in the wilderness around you. Then find survival uses for it in your minds. For example, if it is a log, see how many ways you can each think of to use it in a survival situation. You can play this as a competition or a collaborative effort.

Other games that can boost your wilderness survival skills include ones like guessing how long it will take you to get to some distant landmark. You might also try to identify as many plants as you can while you are hiking, and recall which are edible or useful. Nothing to carry, nothing to gather, and they can be played anywhere - these may be the best games for backpackers, at least for those who like to keep it light.

Camping Escapes For Family Bonding

Subscribe To Our Feed

One of the greatest experiences for family bonding is a camping trip. By leaving all the electronics at home for a few days, you and your family are forced to spend time getting to know one another once again.

While a camping trip can be a lot of work it can also be a lot of fun. Cooking over a campfire or even with a camp stove is quite different than using the microwave at home. The results may be quite different than the microwave stuff you cook at home. Maybe you will discover you really like the taste of food that is cooked over a real fire. Since there is not a dishwasher, you will have to wash some dishes by hand even if you choose to use disposable forks and plates.

The good news is that without electronics, you will have lots of time that you can use for nature walks or to go to see the ranger’s nightly shows. Take time to view all the wildlife as well as flowers that bloom along the path. Even if the kids are too noisy and scare the animals away, take time to enjoy the beautiful plants and wild flowers you will see on those hikes.  Be sure that you breathe in all the fresh air you can.

In the evenings after dinner you can play family games by the lantern light or someone can pull out a guitar and your campsite can lead the campground in your favorite campfire songs.

If the above described camping trip sounds like fun for you, go ahead and reserve a campsite for your family fun today. You can stop reading right here.

If the above described camping trip sounds like less than ideal for you, here is some good news. Many campgrounds are now equipped with wifi. By paying a few dollars more per night you can have electrical hook ups. This will give you power to keep the laptop and hand held video games charged. Some sites even have cable hookups for your television viewing. Camping does not have to be boring any longer.

We do have one request. Do not let your neighbors in the campground know that you brought all the conveniences. When that you hear the first group walking by on their nature walk, quickly stash everything in the tent, use a stick to poke at your campfire, smile and wave.   They think you are roughing it just like they are.
